About TAG Grading (Technical Automatic Grading) Slabs

What Is a TAG Slab?

A TAG slab is the sealed holder used by TAG Grading (Technical Automatic Grading) for graded trading cards. TAG is a newer entrant to the grading market, known for its technology-driven, machine-assisted grading approach and its modern, readable slab design. TAG’s holder uses a standard trading card window with a distinctive modern label area; as a newer slab family it has a smaller installed base than PSA or BGS, but it is growing quickly among modern TCG and sports card collectors.

Because every slab family has its own holder design, protection products should be confirmed against the actual slab footprint rather than assumed. This is why we keep TAG as a separate compatibility track instead of folding it into a generic “graded slab” product.

TAG Slab Dimensions

The TAG holder is built around a standard trading card window (2.5 × 3.5 in / 63.5 × 88.9 mm) with its own label layout. Exact external footprint data is not widely published by independent sources, and holder generations may vary.

Parameter Reference Value Status
External footprint Standard card window footprint; exact outer profile varies by generation Verification Required
Card window Standard trading card (2.5 × 3.5 in / 63.5 × 88.9 mm) Verification Required
Label position Modern label area on holder; positioned per TAG holder design Verification Required
Sealing structure Sealed rigid holder; tamper-evident design Verification Required

Verification Required: TAG does not publish an official dimensional specification for its holders, and independent measurement data is still limited. Confirmed measurements require a physical sample — contact our team if you can provide a TAG slab for verification.

Protection Requirements

  • Confirm fit per generation: Because TAG is a newer holder family with limited published dimensions, fit should be confirmed against a physical slab sample before volume ordering.
  • Surface protection: The compact face area still needs scratch protection for presentation quality.
  • Edge and corner protection for shipping and handling — SGC holders are rigid but still vulnerable at corners and seams.
  • Mixed-inventory convenience: Shops and sellers handling TAG alongside PSA/BGS slabs want a consistent protection system across formats.

Protector Fit and Clearance

Fit is engineered around the TAG holder footprint with controlled clearance: smooth insertion, no rattling, and no pressure on the card window or label area. Because TAG is a newer holder family with limited published data, fit clearance is confirmed against physical slab samples before production and recorded per batch.

Material Options

  • TPU — transparent, flexible guards that keep the compact SGC slab fully visible.
  • Silicone — soft, grippy covers for high-handling environments.
  • Acrylic — rigid cases for display and premium collections.
  • Metal — machined protection for high-value SGC-graded pieces.

Recommended Protection Types

Protection Type Best For Product
Graded card sleeve Surface protection and lightweight storage Graded Card Sleeves
Slab guard / protector Handling and shipping protection Graded Card Guards, Slab Protectors
Slab bumper Corner and edge impact protection Slab Bumpers
Rigid case Storage, display and premium shipping Graded Card Cases

Common Fit Problems

  • Assumed PSA-style fit: The most common fit failure is assuming a protector sized for the larger PSA/BGS/CGC footprint will fit a TAG slab — a loose fit provides no real protection.
  • Unverified interior clearance: Without a confirmed measurement, generic protectors may leave gaps that let the slab shift in transit.
  • Label obstruction: The TAG label area can be partially covered by protectors whose window placement assumes PSA/BGS-style labels.
  • Mixed-format conflicts: Mixed inventories work in one footprint but not the other without per-format protection.

How to Choose

  1. Confirm whether your inventory contains TAG slabs and which holder generation you carry.
  2. Validate fit against a physical TAG slab sample rather than assuming a universal “graded slab” fit.
  3. Verify fit on a physical TAG sample before volume ordering — do not assume PSA-style sizing.
  4. For branded programs, match color, logo and packaging to your retail line.

Start with samples validated against your actual TAG slabs. For development options see custom OEM and private label.

FAQ

TAG’s holder uses a standard trading card window with its own label layout and outer profile. Fit should be confirmed against a physical TAG slab sample; do not assume PSA-style sizing.

Grading companies use different slab designs. A single “universal” product cannot hold every slab family tightly; fit quality depends on per-format interior geometry and confirmed measurements.

No. TOP is an independent manufacturer. TAG compatibility is a design target and we make no claim of official approval, certification or partnership with TAG Grading.
