About PSA Slabs
What Is a PSA Slab?
A PSA slab is the tamper-resistant holder used by Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA), the grading service most commonly encountered in the graded trading card market. Cards graded by PSA are sealed inside a two-piece rigid holder with a label that records the grade, certification number and identifying information. Because PSA-graded cards are widely traded and frequently shipped by card shops, online sellers and wholesalers, slab protection for PSA holders is the highest-volume compatibility category in graded card protection.
PSA holders are produced in batches and have evolved across production runs. Most modern PSA slabs share a common external footprint, but older and promotional holders can differ in label position, thickness and edge profile. This is why fit verification matters before volume ordering.
PSA Slab Dimensions
The following figures are public reference values for the standard PSA slab footprint used across most protection product listings. They are provided to help you compare products, and must be verified against the exact slab version you carry before volume ordering.
| Parameter | Reference Value | Status |
|---|---|---|
| External footprint | Approx. 5.5 × 3.25 in (140 × 83 mm) | Verification Required |
| Card window | Standard trading card (2.5 × 3.5 in / 63.5 × 88.9 mm) | Verification Required |
| Label position | Visible label pocket at top of holder | Verification Required |
| Edge profile | Smooth sealed edges | Verification Required |
Verification Required: PSA does not publish an official dimensional standard for its holders, and slab versions vary across production runs. Confirmed measurements require a physical sample. Contact our team if you can provide a PSA slab for verification.
Protection Requirements
A graded card has three forms of value: the card itself, the assigned grade, and the sealed condition of the holder. Protection therefore targets:
- Surface protection for the front and back faces of the holder, preventing scratches, scuffs and fingerprints that reduce presentation quality.
- Edge and corner protection for the most impact-prone parts of the holder when slabs are stacked, packed or shipped.
- Label protection to keep the grade label legible and unmarked, since a damaged label can reduce buyer trust.
- Secure-fit containment so the slab fits with controlled clearance, without rattling or pressing hard against the holder.
Protector Fit and Clearance
Fit is engineered around two variables: the external footprint of the slab and the clearance of the protector. A well-designed PSAA slab protector uses controlled clearance — enough to slide the slab in and out without force, tight enough to prevent movement during handling. Excessive clearance allows the slab to move inside the protector, which can create abrasion at the contact points. Insufficient clearance makes insertion difficult and risks stressing the holder seam.
Our design targets a slip-fit clearance with soft interior contact points, so the protector touches the slab without pressing against the label area. Exact clearance values are validated against physical samples as part of fit testing and are recorded per production batch.
Material Options
The right material depends on the level of protection your customers need and how the product will be positioned:
- TPU — flexible, transparent, impact-absorbing guards for everyday handling and light shipping protection.
- Silicone — soft, grippy covers with shock absorption for handling-heavy environments such as card shops and trade events.
- Acrylic — rigid display-grade cases for shelving, exhibitions and premium presentation.
- Metal — machined protectors for premium, high-value collections and display lines.
Recommended Protection Types
| Protection Type | Best For | Product |
|---|---|---|
| Graded card sleeve | Surface scratch protection, lightweight storage | Graded Card Sleeves |
| Slab guard / protector | All-round protection for shipping and handling | Graded Card Guards, Slab Protectors |
| Slab bumper | Corner and edge impact protection | Slab Bumpers |
| Rigid case | Storage, display and premium shipping | Graded Card Cases |
Common Fit Problems
- Excessive clearance: Protectors made with too much clearance let the PSA slab rattle and shift during shipping, causing edge marks.
- Oversized protection: Protectors too tight for a specific PSA production run can stress the holder seam or make the label area bulge.
- Label pressure: Designs that press against the label pocket can leave indents on the visible label area.
- Incompatible stacking: Protectors with protruding tabs or hinges can prevent clean stacking in storage boxes and display cases.
- Version drift: Assuming all PSA holders share one exact dimension ignores normal variation between production runs.
How to Choose
- Confirm which holder versions your inventory actually uses — old-run and new-run PSA holders are not always identical.
- Match the protection level to use case: sleeves for storage, guards for handling, bumpers for shipping, rigid cases for display.
- Verify fit on a physical sample before ordering production volume.
- For private label, confirm color, logo placement, packaging and MOQ early in the process.
Start with a sample order to validate fit against your slabs, then scale. See custom OEM and private label for development options.
Testing and Verification
Compatibility status is stated honestly and separately from marketing language. TOP does not claim official partnership, approval or certification with PSA unless a documented agreement exists. Current status levels:
| Status Level | Meaning | PSA Status |
|---|---|---|
| Confirmed | Fit verified on physical PSA slab samples | Pending — verification on sample required |
| Tested | Fit tested under a defined test procedure | Not yet published |
| Designed for | Engineered around the PSA holder footprint | Yes — design target |
| Compatible based on dimensions | Reference dimensions align with published values | Yes — reference values |
| Not verified | No measurement or test data available | Individual run variants not verified |
Important: TOP is an independent manufacturer. We do not claim PSA approval, PSA certification, or any official relationship with PSA unless a documented agreement exists. Verify fit against your exact slab version before volume ordering.
FAQ
Most PSA holders share a common external footprint, but production runs have varied over time in thickness, label position and edge profile. Fit should be verified against the exact version you carry.
TPU is a soft, low-tack material and our guards use controlled clearance and soft contact points, designed not to mark the holder or the label area.
No. TOP is an independent manufacturer and does not claim PSA approval, certification or any official relationship with PSA. Our products are designed for PSA holder compatibility, not endorsed by PSA.
Yes. Sample orders are available so you can verify fit against your exact PSA slabs. Contact us with your expected order volume for pricing and lead time.
Yes. PSA-compatible protectors can be produced under your own brand with custom material, color, logo and packaging. See custom OEM and private label for development details.
