About SGC Slabs
What Is an SGC Slab?
An SGC slab is the sealed holder used by Sportscard Guaranty Corporation (SGC) for graded trading cards. SGC holders are distinctive within the slab family: they use a smaller-format, more compact holder profile that differs visibly from the PSA/BGS/CGC footprint. SGC has grown rapidly in the vintage sports card and TCG markets, and its holder geometry is a common source of fit questions among buyers — SGC slabs are frequently not interchangeable with protectors designed for the larger PSA-style footprint.
Because the SGC holder is built to a different profile, protection products must be designed around the SGC footprint specifically. This is why we keep SGC as a separate compatibility track rather than folding it into a generic “graded slab” product.
SGC Slab Dimensions
The SGC holder uses a more compact footprint than the PSA/BGS/CGC slab family. Exact published dimension data is limited, and holder versions vary between production runs.
| Parameter | Reference Value | Status |
|---|---|---|
| External footprint | Compact, smaller than PSA-style format | Verification Required |
| Card window | Standard trading card (2.5 × 3.5 in / 63.5 × 88.9 mm) | Verification Required |
| Label position | Compact grade label on holder | Verification Required |
| Sealing structure | Sealed rigid holder, compact profile | Verification Required |
Verification Required: SGC does not publish an official dimensional standard, and the compact holder profile makes generic slab protection unreliable. Confirmed measurements require a physical sample — contact our team if you can provide an SGC slab for verification.
Protection Requirements
- Model-specific fit: Because the SGC footprint differs from PSA-style slabs, generic “one size fits all graded slabs” protectors often fit poorly. SGC protection should be engineered to the SGC profile.
- Surface protection: The compact face area still needs scratch protection for presentation quality.
- Edge and corner protection for shipping and handling — SGC holders are rigid but still vulnerable at corners and seams.
- Mixed-inventory convenience: Shops and sellers handling both SGC and PSA-style slabs want a consistent protection system across the two formats.
Protector Fit and Clearance
Fit is engineered around the SGC holder footprint with controlled clearance: smooth insertion, no rattling, and no pressure on the card window or label area. Because the SGC profile differs from the PSA-family footprint, our SGC-track products use a dedicated interior profile rather than a shared insert. Clearance is validated against physical samples before production and recorded per batch.
Material Options
- TPU — transparent, flexible guards that keep the compact SGC slab fully visible.
- Silicone — soft, grippy covers for high-handling environments.
- Acrylic — rigid cases for display and premium collections.
- Metal — machined protection for high-value SGC-graded pieces.
Recommended Protection Types
| Protection Type | Best For | Product |
|---|---|---|
| Graded card sleeve | Surface protection and lightweight storage | Graded Card Sleeves |
| Slab guard / protector | Handling and shipping protection | Graded Card Guards, Slab Protectors |
| Slab bumper | Corner and edge impact protection | Slab Bumpers |
| Rigid case | Storage, display and premium shipping | Graded Card Cases |
Common Fit Problems
- PSA-style assumptions: The most common fit failure is using a protector designed for the larger PSA/BGS/CGC footprint on an SGC slab — the result is a loose, rattling fit with no real protection.
- Corner gaps: Generic protectors leave interior gaps at the shorter SGC profile, letting the slab shift in transit.
- Label obstruction: Compact labels are easy to partially cover with oversized protection windows.
- Stacking conflicts: Mixed-format inventories create storage systems that work for one footprint and not the other.
How to Choose
- Confirm whether your inventory contains SGC slabs and which holder version you carry.
- Choose SGC-specific protection rather than a universal “graded slab” product when fit quality matters.
- Verify fit on a physical SGC sample before volume ordering — do not assume PSA-style sizing.
- For branded programs, match color, logo and packaging to your retail line.
Start with samples validated against your actual SGC slabs. For development options see custom OEM and private label.

FAQ
The SGC holder uses a more compact profile than the PSA/BGS/CGC slab family, so protectors designed for PSA-style slabs typically do not fit SGC slabs correctly. SGC-specific design is recommended.
PSA, BGS and CGC share a similar footprint, but SGC uses a different compact profile. A single “universal” product cannot hold both profiles tightly without compromising fit quality on one of them.
